As the human toll of conflict diamonds and the environmental devastation of diamond mining has entered the mainstream consciousness, the demand for an ethical choice in fine jewelry has skyrocketed.
Concerned about the environment and the ethical implications of diamond jewelry? We are too. Ada Diamonds is proud and honored to celebrate Earth Day 2017 as the world’s first bespoke fine jeweler to offer exclusively conflict free, sustainable, lab grown diamonds. With a strong commitment to sustainability and stewardship at the heart of everything we do, Ada Diamonds is working to form a brighter future with our sustainable diamond jewelry pieces.
Our laboratory grown stones are both chemically and optically identical to mined diamonds, and the modern technology that is used to produce our lab grown diamonds results in a modern and transparent supply chain that ensures no harm to the environment, ecosystems, wildlife or communities in the creation of diamonds.
It’s no secret that mining diamonds from the Earth is an energy intensive and ecologically invasive process. Some open-pit diamond mines are more than 3 miles wide. For the prototypical 1 carat diamond, over 5 tonnes of earth must be blasted and extracted by heavy diesel equipment. Every year, millions of tons of greenhouse gasses are emitted to mine diamonds in fragile ecosystems around the world including the Canadian and Siberian arctic tundra, the desert of Western Australia, and rivers of Africa.
Unfortunately, the mined diamond industry has also been particularly careless about protecting sensitive marine habitats from seabed mining. Ocean mining destroys large swaths of ocean floor, with disastrous effects on fish and marine life. There are conservation concerns regarding the destruction of these habitats by mining, the resulting loss of biodiversity and the uncertainty that habitats and biodiversity may not recover once mining has ceased.
By contrast, Ada’s cultured diamonds are envisioned and grown with the utmost care toward nature, animals, and ecosystems. Our diamond growth processes are both energy efficient, sustainable and do not contribute to water or air pollution. Many of Ada’s suppliers are already using renewable energy for their diamond production. Virtually no water is used to grow diamonds, and it only takes about a gram of raw carbon (graphite) to produce every carat of diamond that we sell. All by-products and chemicals used during the diamond growth processes are either recycled or properly disposed of via chemical processing companies. We are working toward using 100% recycled materials in all of our jewelry, and guarantee that all of our earth-extracted gold and platinum has been mined sustainably and responsibly.
