Cushion Cuts: A Brilliant Classic
An undeniably popular style, the Cushion Cut diamond comes in two distinctly different types. Read on to learn which one is right for you!
Cushion cut diamonds are a favorite fancy cut, and for good reason: they are beautifully classic stones that are either an intermediary shape between a round or a square, or between a rectangle and an oval shape. There are two different types of cushions, the cushion brilliant and the cushion modified brilliant. We love how the two different types lend an entirely different look.
The cushion that you seek for yourself or your loved one really all comes down to personal preference on how the stone flirts with light. They lend to two very different looking stones due to their technical faceting standard. Simply put, the cushion brilliant diamonds appears more like a star, and cushion modified brilliant appears more like crushed ice.
First, we'll dive into the more common and popular stone, the cushion brilliant. As opposed to the crushed ice look, these diamonds have crisp, clear faceting and bright sparkle with larger than average face up size appearance. Their facets extend from the center of the diamond out towards the outer edge, forming a beautiful star look. In general, these stones tend to be more popular as they resemble the appearance of the round brilliant cut.
In contrast, the cushion modified brilliant cut resembles sparkling water or crushed ice. It gives off many small flashes of light and exhibits color more readily. This is a fun cut because it gives loads of sparkle. This cut tends to be less expensive since cutters save more weight when cutting them from rough diamonds. However, even though it's less popular than the cushion brilliant, we have found that some of our clients do indeed prefer this lovely flow of small sparkle!
Many A-listers have adopted the classic style, and we can’t help but stargaze as they traipse around the red carpet with their beautiful and unique cushion cut styles. Some of our favorites are Kelly Rowland's 6 carat pave halo ring and Jessica Biel's 6 carat vintage style engagement ring. Even though these celebs have adopted cushion cuts as their everyday accessory and helped create a pop-culture resurgence, it’s still important to note that one cut is not necessarily a “superior” cut to the other.
Figuring out which type of cushion you choose is really a fun, personal journey. The characteristic eye-catching sparkle of both of these cuts lends well to being worn not just on your hand, but as custom fashion jewelry as well.
