A Stunning Sparkler & One For The Ages: Six Prong Solitaire Featuring a 1.70ct Oval
Once upon a time... there was a spectacular oval diamond and a groom who knew exactly what his sweetheart desired.
In today's Design Series feature, we share the story of a client in search of the perfect stone. This particular gentleman discovered Ada Diamonds through articles he’d seen in his quest for a laboratory grown diamond. On the initial call with his Diamond Concierge, it was clear that this client had a passion to build a ring his fiancée would love forever. Fortunately they had decided as a couple that lab grown was the way to go. It was music to our ears!
Although it was early on in his search, he knew as soon as he found the right diamond, he was ready to purchase. On the Concierge’s discovery call with the client, we learned he was envisioning a simple solitaire featuring a large oval diamond with a thin band and 6 prongs in 14kt yellow gold. The six-prong setting is unusual for this shape of diamond and presented a unique challenge to our design team. When his Diamond Concierge located an incredible 1.70ct D color VVS1 clarity oval diamond and sent over the third party grading report, the client knew he wanted to explore it further. The Concierge sent him a video of the stone for consideration.
He noticed what looked like a blemish in the video, and pointed it out to the Concierge. The Concierge explored further, inspecting the stone in person and discovering it turned out to just be a dried water spot in the video. Phew! Sometimes that can happen, so in order to alleviate his fears, our Concierge gave the diamond a thorough cleaning and then shot several videos on her hand in various real-life lighting scenarios.
Additionally, his Concierge sent this high resolution video from our lightbox. Once he saw the HD video, he knew this diamond was the ONE.
Excited to move forward, it was time to finalize the design of a six-prong solitaire with a petite band.
One of our lead designers conceptualized a way to let in maximum light into the oval while also keeping six prongs and a low profile. The basket exposed enough of the diamond to maximum light. Initially, we designed the ring with his requested 1.5mm band. The Concierge sent over rough renderings. These renderings are created using CAD 3D modeling software called Matrix and often show extra thick metal, extended prongs, and inaccurate colors. The Concierge encouraged him to use his imagination, and that photorealistic renderings would be forthcoming.
After seeing the initial rough renderings, the Client decided to increase the band size to 2.0mm and lift the stone ever so slightly to let in more light. After looking at examples of claw prongs, the client also opted to go with single claw prongs, which are visible in the final photorealistic renderings sent at the end of the design process.
Once we made the requested changes, the client received these final photorealistic renderings.
After approving the final renderings, the ring was cast and set here in California and was ready to ship in 2 weeks time. The ring was shipped fully insured via Fedex and securely held at a Fedex Office location in order to ensure the proposal could be a complete surprise. The client was provided with an Appraisal and Statement of Replacement Value, along with the original third party grading certificate, all of which can be used to obtain private insurance.
The fairy tale didn't end there! The groom proposed with a hidden photographer and was generous enough to share some of the beautiful shots. In the client's own words:
