What Makes Pear Cuts Special

The pear is considered to have the largest spread of all diamond shapes. Its elongated outline and wide base make it look visibly larger on the finger than other shapes of the same carat weight, and the pointed tip creates a natural lengthening effect.

Pears are cut in a range of proportions. Length-to-width ratios typically run from 1.40 to 1.65; a longer, narrower pear at the higher end, a shorter, wider one at the lower.

Like oval diamonds, pears can have a visible bow-tie effect, essentially a shadow spanning the width of the diamond. Ada's concierge team carefully hand selects and visually inspects each diamond to ensure all of our lab grown diamonds are eye clean with no bow-tie effect or inclusions.

Because of their elongated cut, pears tend to show color more easily than other shapes, especially at the pointed tip. If you want a bright white diamond, staying in the higher color grades is worth prioritizing. We also screen for light leakage, which can make a stone appear darker or warmer than its color grade suggests.

The pointed tip of a pear cut needs protection in the setting. A v-prong or pointed prong at the tip is the standard choice, and it keeps the shape's silhouette clean.
